The morning’s grey was a sky that sneaked up on us. It had been a week of sun and warmth, but this day the scent of summer rain foretold a soaking. So it was with full knowledge of that possibility that my son and I left the house for a little stroll along a multi-use trail nearby. While it had yet to drop a drip, that sky was getting ready and we did to – donning our light-rain gear for the brief out & back to a recently restored nature site along the scenic Springwater Trail. Even our dachshund , Daisy, sported her rain-repellent jacket.
While we walked, we chatted with each other (Daisy chatted with every passing runner & cyclist) and got to know each other again.
“No, I don’t want to eat blackberries off the vine, Dad. I don’t like blackberries.”
“See? Here’s the rash I mentioned that happens when my body gets overheated.”
“I’m not much of a pet person. I’ve just never really valued an emotional connection with an animal.”
As we talked, it occurred to me that having lived together for the past three years, I knew more about my dog than I did about my son. Now that he’s moving in after staying at his mothers’, that gap in intimacy will close.
For this moment, however, that gap’s getting filled in with rainwater!
